White Sox Roll Behind Alvarez

Wilson Alvarez extended his scoreless streak to 17 innings, combining with two relievers on a five-hitter Tuesday night as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Kansas City Royals 4-0 at Comiskey Park.

Alvarez (6-6) allowed four hits in eight innings. He has allowed only one run in the last 32-2/3 innings overall.

It was the White Sox fourth straight win.

Yankees 12, Tigers 9 Detroit

Tino Martinez connected for his second home run and fifth hit of the game, breaking a ninth-inning tie and lifting New York over Detroit.

The Yankees, who led 9-3 in the sixth, went ahead 10-9 when Martinez led off with his 25th homer. The blast came off Mike Myers (0-4).

Orioles 6, Brewers 2 Milwaukee

Shawn Boskie scattered four hits over five solid innings and Pete Incaviglia homered for the first time since May 4 as Baltimore beat Milwaukee.

Boskie (4-3) won for the first time as a starter this season, retiring 15 of 19 batters after giving up consecutive doubles to start the bottom of the first inning. He had been 0-2 with a 10.76 ERA in four starts this year.

Indians 10, Twins 5 Cleveland

Jim Thome hit his third homer in two days and 11th of June, Sandy Alomar extended his hitting streak to 23 games and Jaret Wright won in his major-league debut as Cleveland beat Minnesota.

Alomar doubled in two runs with the bases loaded in the sixth inning. Matt Williams and Brian Giles added homers as the Indians backed Wright, their No. 1 draft in 1994, with their 12th three-homer game.

Red Sox 9, Blue Jays 6 Toronto

Nomar Garciaparra had four hits, including a home run, and scored four times as Boston beat Toronto for its fourth straight victory.

Darren Bragg homered and drove in three runs for the Red Sox. Scott Hatteberg singled twice during Boston’s five-run second inning.

Joe Carter homered and Ed Sprague and Orlando Merced each had three hits as Toronto lost its fourth in a row. The Blue Jays fell a season-high five games below .500.

Angels 7, Rangers 6 Arlington, Texas

Craig Grebeck’s one-out RBI double in the ninth off relief ace John Wetteland snapped a tie and Anaheim beat slumping Texas for its sixth straight.

Luis Alicea doubled with one out in the ninth off loser Xavier Hernandez (0-1) and Grebeck followed with a double off Wettland down the left-field line to score Alicea and hand the Rangers yet another one-run loss. They are 5-17 in such games this season.

Clearing the bases

The Royals placed pitcher Randy Veres on the 15-day disabled list because of stiffness in his right shoulder. Pitcher Jamie Walker was recalled from his rehab assignment at Double-A Wichita, where he made five relief appearances and was 0-1 with a 9.45 ERA. … Indians outfielder David Justice and actress Halle Berry are officially divorced. The couple, in a joint statement, announced terms and conditions of the divorce were confidential. … Justice, who has a hyperextended left elbow, and Chad Ogea, who has a strained right elbow, both were placed on the 15-day disabled list. Eligible to come off the DL on July 7, Justice could play in the AllStar Game the next day … Sandy Alomar is eight games away from the clubrecord 31-game hitting streak, set in 1906 by Nap Lajoie. The major league record for a catcher is 34, by Benito Santiago in 1987. Alomar’s streak is the fourth-longest in the A.L. this year.
