Johnston’s Hole-In-One Highlights Chewelah Pro-Am
Dave Christensen, an assistant pro at Indian Canyon, held off Downriver pro Dan Porter to win the Athletic Round Table Pro-Am on Monday.
But it was another Downriver golfer, amateur Dave Johnston, who stole the spotlight at the Inland Empire PGA event at Chewelah Golf and Country Club.
Johnston, an 8-handicapper, aced his 2-iron tee shot on the 182-yard eighth hole en route to a 1-over-par 73 that earned him a share of first in the 0-8 handicap division with a net 65. He tied Joe Trembly of Liberty Lake.
It was his fifth career hole-in-one and exciting, “but I would rather have shot par,” he said. “I bogeyed the last hole.”
Christensen shot a 3-under-par 69 (34-35) to Porter’s 70 (36-34).
Two Coeur d’Alene Golf Club pros, Dave Lowe (71) and Mike Elmore (72), were third and fourth, the former sharing honors with amateurs Bob Buechel of Sundance and Jim O’Rourke of Spokane Country Club, the only other players in the small field under par.
Other net leaders were Ron Lollis of Downriver with a 64 in the 9-13 handicap division and Mike Varney of Twin Lakes Village and Jay Jensen of Sundance, who matched 67s atop the 14-30.
