Sinn Fein Member Discovers Car Bomb

Compiled From Wire Services

The IRA-allied Sinn Fein Party called for vigilance Friday after police defused a bomb that had been placed under a member’s car.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but suspicion fell on pro-British militants, who attack Catholics and retaliate for Irish Republican Army violence.

The incident comes amid increasing tension in Northern Ireland, where IRA attackers killed two policemen Monday.

James McCarry, a local government councilor, told Downtown Radio that he spotted the 1-1/2-pound explosive Thursday night while checking out his car, parked outside his home in Ballycastle, 45 miles north of Belfast.

“I have young children and the local school bus stops at the gate just in front of the car,” McCarry said. “It might not have been me they killed. There could have been quite a few other casualties.”
