WSU Instructor Honored With Boeing Professorship
Julie Lutz, Washington State University professor of astronomy and mathematics, and director of the Program in Astronomy, has been named Boeing Distinguished Professor of Mathematics and Science Education.
Lutz, with WSU since 1971, is a nationally recognized leader in working to improve science education in grades K-12, and has conducted workshops for elementary and secondary school teachers.
Shannon McKinney, a junior majoring in chemistry and biology at Ripon (Wis.) College, has been inducted into the Laurel Society, a senior honor society, Beta Beta Beta, an honor society in biology, and Eka Francian, an honor society in chemistry.
She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David McKinney, Medical Lake.
Marine Cpl. Cecil Bridges received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal while serving as quality control manager with Marine Wing Support Squadron 372, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station in Camp Pendleton, Calif.
He is a 1994 graduate of Riverside High School, and the son of Mark and Gladys Graves, Elk.
George Appia III was promoted to master sergeant with the Air Force while stationed at the 605th Test Squadron detachment at The Boeing Co. in Seattle.
He is a 1979 graduate of Ferris High School, and the son of George and Mary Appia, Spokane.
Army National Guard Pvt. Kristopher Workman, the son of Richard and Nancy Sundstrom of Valleyford, graduated from the motor transportation operator course at Fort Leonard Wood in Waynesville, Mo.
Karen Geisler was promoted to major with the Army while serving as a clinical instructor at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio.
She is a 1973 graduate of Rogers High School and the daughter of Martha Kent, Spokane.
The Spokane Construction Council awarded scholarships to the following students whose parents are either owners of or employees of member firms:
Matthew Babcock, Paul Babcock, Katie Boileau, Joseph Bozo, Kalie Cossette, Ty Dempsey, Nathan Donnelly, Emilie Herbst, Ryan Jarvie, Kyle Kasman and Kelly Kearsley.
Alison Krogel, Angela Largent-Helmke, Lorie Lee, Marisa Neste, Jennifer Peterson, Simon Prosser, Brandon Spackman, Cory Stroud and Jonathan Wells.
Amy Stearns, a Junior at Sprague High School, placed first in the Junior American Citizen Contest sponsored by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Stearns wrote an essay on a special teacher, Hugh O’Brien.
Clay and Tim Wilken, received honorable mention for their video presentation featuring their mother. Clay is a sophomore at Sprague High, and Tim is a seventh-grader at Lamont Junior High.
Both entries, sponsored by the Jonah Babcock Chapter, were displayed at the DAR’s Continental Congress in Washington, D.C.
