Children Blamed For Garage Fire

From Staff And Wire Reports

A fire believed set by five children blackened a one-car garage Saturday night. The fire, near the corner of Cedar and Broadway, also threatened adjacent apartments.

Spokane Fire Battalion Chief Hal Williams said one of the youths, an 11-year-old boy, had been caught.

A house that used to sit next to the garage on the same lot burned down in January. Williams didn’t say whether the fires were related.

“It sounds like they were just in there playing at this point,” Williams said, adding he didn’t know if the children were actually trying to burn the garage down.

Four engines arrived to douse the blaze, which started around 7:10 p.m. The garage was blackened and leaning after the fire, but still standing.

Williams said it was fortunate the fire was quenched quickly, or the fire could have spread to houses and apartments. , DataTimes
