Bus Plunge Kills At Least 35 People

Compiled From Wire Services

At least 35 people died Saturday when the bus they were traveling in plunged off a mountainous road in the western province of Huehuetenango, authorities said.

Volunteer firemen said they were still working to recover the bodies of the victims. Guatemalan army troops were also helping in the rescue effort.

Ambulances from several nearby communities were used to transport injured passengers who had been trapped inside the bus.

Rescue workers were unable to confirm the number of dead and wounded, Huehuetenango state spokesman William de Leon said.

The accident occurred near the town of Santa Cruz Barrillas, Huehuetenango, about 170 miles east of Guatemala City.
