Suspect Admits Assault, Sex With Runaway

A suspected serial rapist has admitted assaulting a north Spokane woman and having sex with a 13-year-old girl who ran away from an area shelter, detectives said in affidavits filed Friday.

Demetrius Dean, 34, is charged with first-degree rape, first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary and second-degree child rape in the two incidents.

More charges may be added as detectives try to link Dean to at least two other attacks on Spokane-area girls.

He also is wanted on a Snohomish County warrant charging him with third-degree child rape.

Spokane police Detective Terry Boardman wrote in an affidavit that Dean told her he likes to target young teenagers.

“It’s a sick thing,” the defendant told Boardman. “I like young girls because they’re small.”

Dean was arrested in east Spokane on Thursday after two officers spotted him driving a Mazda RX-7 down East Sprague. Witnesses spotted the car at the scene of one of the rapes.

On Friday, District Court Commissioner Vance Peterson ordered Dean held on a $200,000 cash-only bond.

Dean has confessed to raping a 34-year-old woman in her home Wednesday morning and having sex with the 13-year-old girl on July 16, according to court records.

Dean apparently knew the adult victim’s daughter, affidavits state.

He told detectives he entered the woman’s house in the 6100 block of North Forest Boulevard about 2:30 a.m. tied her up, robbed her of $15 and a Visa card, cut her night shirt off with a knife then raped her twice.

Dean had the credit card and the victim’s watch in his possession when he was arrested, detectives said.

He also told investigators he had consensual sex with the teenager to prepare her to be a prostitute.

The girl, who was a runaway living at a Spokane youth center, was desperate for money and thinking of becoming a hooker, Dean told detectives.

He claimed the teenager asked him to have intercourse with her so she wouldn’t “be a virgin when she entered the world of prostitution.”

“The defendant stated he would never have had intercourse with her if she had not asked him to oblige her request,” Board wrote.
