Sharp Cat won the $200,000 Hollywood Oaks, the seventh graded stakes victory of her career, at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, Calif.

Fifteen days after failing as the favorite in the Mother Goose at Belmont Park, the 3-year-old daughter of Storm Cat, after a tardy start, moved up to take a clear lead under Alex Solis after a quarter of a mile, set rapid splits and went on to win by three lengths over Freeport Flight in 1:49-3/5 for the 1-1/8 miles.

It was the first victory in four tries at nine furlongs for Sharp Cat, but it is still questionable whether she really wants to run that far. It took her 14 seconds to negotiate the final eighth of a mile.

Al Braverman, 78, a longtime boxing manager and promoter who spent the last 22 years of his life working for Don King, died from complications of diabetes in Yonkers, N.Y.

Braverman, unbeaten as a heavyweight from 1938-41, was a throwback, a Runyonesque character of the kind that thrived during the 1940s and ‘50s, particularly in New York. A cornerman and trainer, he went to work for King in 1975 as director of boxing, negotiating contracts for King-promoted fights.
