Smith Helps Cougs Tame Wildcats

Joanna Smith scored 23 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in Tempe, Ariz., Thursday night as hot-shooting Washington State knocked off Arizona State 86-78 in a Pacific-10 Conference women’s basketball game.
Laura Wilder scored 21 points and Amy Saneholtz added 17 for the Cougars (8-9, 2-6), who shot 55.8 percent (29 of 52) from the field in winning for only the third time in their last 10 games.
Molly Tuter scored 33 points to lead the Sun Devils (7-11, 1-7), who have lost seven of their last eight conference games.
Smith scored 16 of her points in the first half on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor, including four 3-pointers. Tuter scored 10 points and added three steals.

Freshman Lisa Griffith scored 12 of her 23 points in the second half and started a clinching 15-0 run as the Wildcats beat the Huskies in a Pac-10 showdown in Tucson, Ariz.
Griffith started the 15-0 run for Arizona (15-4, 5-3) with a 3-point goal for a 56-46 lead with 10:27 remaining.
UW (9-8, 4-4) was led by Jamie Redd’s 15 points. Laurie Savasta added 12 points and Amber Hall 11.
