Hearing To Discuss Fairchild Waste Sites

From Staff And Wire Reports

Spokane County residents concerned about hazardous waste sites at Fairchild Air Force Base can talk about them today with experts from state and county government.

About 30 hazardous waste sites have been identified on the base, and some environmental sampling indicates that contaminants have moved to off-site groundwater wells. Fairchild was named a Superfund site in 1989.

Residents of Medical Lake and Airway Heights can speak from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Harmon Community Center, 13th and Lundstrom streets, in Airway Heights.

Those who live on the base will be interviewed from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Deel Community Center, 5 W. Bong St.

Representatives from the state departments of Health and Ecology and the Spokane County Health District will listen to concerns in the confidential meetings.

The Department of Health is collecting these concerns as part of a public health assessment. These assessments look at the release of hazardous substances into the environment, evaluate the potential for human exposure and examine any potential damage from exposure. , DataTimes
