Fixed Levy Favored For School Districts

From Staff And Wire Reports

Rep. David Bivens lost by just two votes last session, so he’s trying again.

At the request of the Meridian Republican, the House Revenue and Taxation Committee introduced his bill allowing school districts to impose a fixed levy for school construction. A similar bill last session cleared the House but failed by two votes in the Senate.

The levy could be started only if 60 percent of the voters approve, but it would avoid the need to pass a bond election every time a district needed a new facility. Bivens’ Meridian School District is one of the fastest-growing in the state.
