Dollar Stronger Vs. The Mark

The dollar touched a new 2-1/2-year high vs. the mark and ended broadly higher in other currency dealings Monday, helped by fresh news of fragility in Japan’s banking system and German weakness.

Traders said the dollar also derived strength from mark weakness on fears of Russian President Boris Yeltsin’s deteriorating health and remarks by Swiss Finance Minister Kaspar Villiger, who said he welcomed the Swiss franc’s recent depreciation.

The dollar’s strength reinforced the market perception that the U.S. currency has further room to appreciate.
