One of the few times the raucous Groovy Shoes crowd reacted to what was happening on the court Friday night was when Chris Anderson stole the ball and dunked on a breakaway.
That was just the wakeup the Shadle Park senior needed to spark the Highlanders to a 56-44 win over North Central in a Greater Spokane League basketball game at the Arena.
“That helped me, it gave me some confidence,” Anderson said after scoring 14 of his 18 points in the second half and grabbing nine rebounds.
Most of the time the crowd was yelling to try to win the Groovy Shoes, which North Central captured for the fourth time in the seven years of spirit competition. The steady roar made it tough for players and coaches to communicate.
“It’s extremely difficult to do what we do,” Shadle Park coach Darcy Weisner said. “We do a lot of talking on defense. We had to limit our offense. We called three plays all night.”
The best call was Anderson’s wake-up call. He followed his dunk by busting a 3-pointer from the right corner for a 30-20 lead late in the third quarter.
Chris Blotsky’s 3 got NC within five early in the fourth quarter, and the Indians got the ball back. A turnover ruined that chance, and the Highlanders (10-3, 8-1) ran off 12 straight to wrap up the game. Anderson had five points and two assists in the run.
“I got mad at myself,” Anderson said of his four-point first half. “I wasn’t concentrating enough to put the ball in the hoop. I just relaxed a little bit. I was overanxious, trying too hard.”
Nate Dunham had eight of his 12 points in the second quarter when the Highlanders opened a 25-16 lead.
Jeff Meyers and Ryan Hann helped pick up the slack until Anderson got untracked. Myers had seven rebounds in the first half and Hann scored 14 points.
“They do that quite a bit,” Anderson said. “They don’t get noticed quite as much as Nate and I.”
“It’s becoming more typical,” Weisner added. “Nate and Chris get a lot of defensive attention but if those kids weren’t as good as they are, there would be too much pressure. I think we’re becoming more of a team.”
NC (3-10, 1-8) made 14 of 15 free throws but couldn’t buy a basket from the field, hitting just 12 of 47, including 4 of 26 in the first half.
Blotsky finished with 14 points. Aaron Farr, who made all eight of his free throws, added 15.
The victory was the Highlanders’ eighth straight heading into a Tuesday showdown with league-leading Ferris at Shadle Park. The Saxons won the first meeting at Ferris 57-46.
