Kacey Frederickson Ferris Year: Junior Sport: Gymnastics Event: All-Around
The incident was eerily reminiscent of the one that had befallen another Ferris gymnast two years earlier.
Yet Kacey Frederickson, unlike Liz Miller, was able to get right back on the bars.
Frederickson lost her grip and fell while competing on the uneven bars Jan. 9 at Central Valley. Dazed and sore - but able to continue - she finished fifth in the all-around. She had won the all-around in three previous Greater Spokane League meets this season.
Last Thursday, Frederickson returned to winning form, sweeping all four events and scoring 35.8 to win the all-around at home.
Her mishap on the bars came dangerously close to repeating Miller’s. Miller, a senior last year when she finished second all-around at the Region IV-AAA meet, tore up her knee at CV in mid-December 1995 and missed the rest of the season. Miller’s father, who videotaped that scary event, was standing in nearly the same spot Jan. 9 to videotape Frederickson.
Frederickson damaged her knee two years ago, but not to the extent that she required surgery.
“Realistically … she thought she might be done,” said Ferris coach Bill Christianson.
“I knew I would get back into it, but I didn’t know if I’d be up to the same level,” Frederickson said.
