Associated Press

A man and five youths, including two of his own children, died when their vehicle slid on ice and collided with a tractor-trailer rig.

The Idaho State Police reported that David Barnson, 39, of Montpelier, was eastbound on U.S. Highway 30 between Montpelier and the Wyoming border Friday night when he slid on ice as he attempted to pass a truck.

Out of control, Barnson’s Ford Explorer then collided with another, oncoming rig.

Barnson’s two children, Andrew, 11, and Jenny, 12; Toya Thomas, 14, and Julie Hunter, 15, of Bloomington; and Britney Miller, 15, of Georgetown, were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Barnson was taken by helicopter to Bannock Regional Medical Center in Pocatello, where he died at 5:45 a.m. Saturday.

Joy Rolland, 16, of Ovid, was the only survivor. She was taken to Bear Lake Memorial Hospital and treated for a fractured left leg and abrasions. Her condition was listed Saturday as stable and improving.

Truck driver Daniel Mack Myers, 28, no hometown available, was taken to Bear Lake Memorial Hospital, treated and released.
