Obituaries

Alfred Butler Spokane

Memorial service for Alfred B. Butler, 85, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rockwood Manor. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of cremation.

Mr. Butler, who died Wednesday, was born in Spokane.

He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and from Washington State College with a bachelor’s degree in physics and a master’s degree in education.

He taught physics in Pasco and in Spokane at North Central High School for several years before he joined the Washington State College physics department in 1943.

He served as the director of the National Science Foundation Summer Institute and presented a 15-minute weekly radio program called “Science in the News” for many years.

In 1972 he received the Washington Science Teachers Association award for outstanding contributions and service to the young people of Washington state.

He also received the Outstanding Educators of America Award in 1973 in recognition of professional and civic achievements.

Mr. Butler retired in 1975 and moved to the Newman Lake area.

He was a member of Westerners International and the Valley Open Bible Church.

His wife, Ava, died in 1993.

Survivors include a son, Bruce Butler of Spokane; a daughter, Beryl Turner of Portland; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Louie Miller Spokane

Memorial service for Louie E. Miller, 90, is planned for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Waterville, Wash., Mr. Miller died Wednesday.

He was a 55-year Spokane resident and had worked for Union Pacific Railroad for 30 years.

He is survived by a son, Don Miller of Spokane; two stepsons, Jim and Mike Borgardts; a daughter, Patricia Getner of Portland; two stepdaughters, Sherry Poland and Judy Gilpin; a sister, Lydia Bakken of Spokane; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

John Fairchild Spokane

Memorial service for John Fairchild, 90, will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home. Mr. Fairchild died Wednesday.

He was born in Kansas and later moved to Spokane, where he worked as a machinist and draftsman for the city. He also was a leather craftsman.

Mr. Fairchild played the guitar, harmonica and piano.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret. Survivors include a son, Arvel Fairchild of Veradale; a brother, Clyde Fairchild of Coeur d’Alene; and two grandchildren.

Billee Campbell Spokane

Memorial service for Billee H. Campbell, 73, will be at 1 p.m. today at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints in Liberty Lake. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Campbell, who died Tuesday, was born in McLouth, Kan.

He was a carpenter in commercial construction and lived in the Spokane area for 33 years.

He served in the Army during World War II.

Mr. Campbell is survived by his wife, Glenora Campbell; a son, Kevin Campbell of Otis Orchards; a daughter, Janis Feichtner of Knoxville, Tenn.; a sister, Jeanne Gerberick of San Bernadino, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

Eveline Francis Zickler Spokane

Memorial service for Eveline Francis Zickler, 65, is set for 1 p.m. today at Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel. Inurnment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Zickler, who was born in Craig, Colo., died Wednesday.

She was a homemaker and was a member of the Rock Rollers Club of Spokane and the Corbin Senior Center.

Her husband, Gene Zickler, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Zickler is survived by three sons, Gary, Alan and Karl Zickler, all of Spokane; a sister, Marcella Poelle of Corvallis, Ore.; and four grandchildren.

Harold ‘Jim’ Smick Spokane

Graveside service for Harold H. “Jim” Smick, 76, will be at 11 a.m. today at Endicott (Wash.) Cemetery. Memorial service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Central Lutheran Church. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Smick, who died Wednesday, was born in Endicott, where he farmed for 45 years.

He moved to Spokane about 10 years ago.

He was a member of Central Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Maxine; five sons, Ron Smick of Seattle, Kirk Smick of Jonesboro, Ga., Greg Smick of Issaquah, Wash., and Monty and Brad Smick, both of Spokane; a sister, Agnes Knott of Endicott; and 10 grandchildren.

Anthony Dinatale Spokane

Rosary for Anthony A. Dinatale, 62, is set for 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dinatale, who was born in Portland, died las Saturday.

He moved to Spokane 16 years ago from California, where he worked as a heavy-duty truck mechanic for more than 30 years, working mostly in the San Francisco Bay area.

He was married to Lucille Roe for 25 years. They were divorced in 1980.

He was a member of St. Thomas More Parish and the Elks Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Hattie; three sons, Michael, Anthony and Dominic Dinatale; two daughters, Debra Knorr and Mary Manning; two stepsons, William and Stephen Miller; two stepdaughters, Janet Voorhees and Rose Erbland; his mother, Delia DeNateli; three sisters, Rose Rangel and Gerri Thompson, both of Modesto, Calif., and Anna-Marie Blunt of Boise; two brothers, John of Crescent City, Calif., and Jerry of Portland; six grandchildren and nine stepgrandchildren.

Peter VanHattum Spokane

No service will be held for Peter William VanHattum. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mr. VanHattum, 100, died Wednesday.

He was born in Holland and immigrated to the United States with his father when he was 18.

They settled in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Mr. VanHattum enlisted in the Army and served two years during World War I. Due to his military service,, he received his citizenship papers in 1918.

He worked as an accountant for 27 years for General Motors in Grand Rapids and retired in 1966.

He moved to Spokane 12 years ago.

His wife of 52 years, Mable VanHattum, died in 1975.

He is survived by a sister, Minnie Blesma of Williamsburg, Mich.; a brother, Rudy VanHattum of Grand Rapids; seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Wilbur VanLeuven Sun Lakes, Ariz.

Memorial service for Wilbur A. VanLeuven, a former Spokane resident, will be held at a later date. Burial was at Riverside Memorial Park. Bueler Mortuary in Chandler, Ariz., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. VanLeuven, 83, died Sunday in Arizona.

He was born in Molson, Wash.

He graduated from Washington State University and served in an Army medical unit during World War II.

He retired from the city of Spokane in 1978, having served as the city health inspector for many years.

He and his wife of 55 years, Joyce (Krebs) VanLeuven, moved to Sun Lakes 15 years ago.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Marti Rice of Huntington Beach, Calif.; a sister, Florence Castillo of Portland; a brother, the Rev. George Van Leuven of St. Clair, Mich.; and a grandson.

Richard Harwood Wallace

Memorial service for Richard Hugh “Dick” Harwood, 45, will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the Wallace Funeral Chapel. Shoshone Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Harwood, who was born in Spokane, died Wednesday.

He lived in the Silver Valley most of his life and graduated from Mullan High School. He had worked for the Shoshone County assessor for 24 years.

Mr. Harwood was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Wallace.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy; a son, Rick Harwood of Cascade, Idaho; a daughter, Shaue Bushaum of Seattle; three stepdaughters, Joni Davis of Wallace, and Pam Davis and Vicki Abraham, both of Spokane; a stepson, Bob Davis of Minnesota; a sister, Denise Presswood of Cataldo, Idaho; and 14 grandchildren.

Marcine Vaswig Spokane

Service for Marcine Vaswig, 64, is planned for 1 p.m. Monday at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Vaswig, who died Wednesday, was born in Garry, Ind.

She was a graduate of Rogers High School and attended Pacific Lutheran College. In 1952 she married William Vaswig in Spokane.

She was a homemaker and a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her husband; two sons, John and Philip Vaswig, both of Spokane; four daughters, Joanna Stevens of Redmond, Wash., Charis Pugh of Snohomish, Wash., and Rene Power and Mairi Vaswig, both of Tacoma; a brother, Paul Hosea of Seattle; a sister, Carole Vohs of Valley, Wash.; and 10 grandchildren.

Mary Keltner Spokane

Vigil service for Mary E. Keltner, 75, was Friday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Private inurnment was at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Miss Keltner, 75, died Monday.

She was born in Spokane and worked as a nurses’ aide for Westview Home-Agape.

She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church and the Faith and Light Group.

There are no surviving family members.
