John Glenn Sets Another Aviation Record

Once again, John Glenn is a record-setting aviator.

The National Aeronautic Association announced Wednesday that it has certified that Glenn, 75, set a record by piloting his twin-engine Beechcraft Baron from Dayton, Ohio, to Washington in one hour, 36 minutes.

Average speed for the 367-mile flight: 229 miles per hour.

Glenn set the record for his plane’s class of aircraft on Dec. 17, returning from a commemoration of the Wright brothers’ first flight.

The certification group’s Art Greenfield said, “I can’t think of a more appropriate way to honor the Wright brothers.

“Although a routine flight for Sen. Glenn, this record characterizes the true pioneering spirit of American aviation,” Greenfield said.
