Excel Distributes Grants To Cda School District

EXCEL (Extras to Create Excellent Learning) Foundation of Coeur d’Alene recently distributed 35 grants totalling more than $32,000 to the Coeur d’Alene School District to promote quality education. This is the rest of the list of recipients and their projects, listed by school.

Ramsey Elementary: Paula Marano, “Scholastic News Magazine,” to provide Scholastic News Magazines for four third-grade classes; Kristi Nivette, Ramsey Elementary, “Accelerating the Excitement in Reading”, providing materials to maintain enthusiasm for reading to correspond with the schools Accelerated Reading Program; Clarissa Jackson, “Listening to Read,” to pair students with engaging books that will help them feel successful and like to read; Nancy Larsen, Jill McDowell, and Holly McNee, “Young Artist’s Traveling Art Gallery,” to create an after school art program for students to produce paintings of local points of interest that will be displayed in area businesses.

Hayden Lake Elementary: Mary Bologna, “Investigate, Discover, Extend,” allows students to investigate how authors create their books, discover some of the books, and extend learning by creating their own published piece; Lisa Ramsey, “Elite Learners,” to use T.V. Elite units to turn classroom computers into teaching tools by transmitting to any television for whole class viewing purposes.

Winton and Hayden Lake elementary schools: Gerri Paradee, “Music to Motivate Creativity,” to use classical music to promote cultural understandings of periods in art history.

Borah Elementary: Jane Morgan, “Imagination Express,” to provide supplemental art, music and creative movement materials for a team taught program for all students; Cindi Unden, “Trucker Buddies,” to allow students to communicate with a trucker and learn about communities, distance, travel time, road and weather conditions, weight and geography.

Sorenson Elementary: Becky Olin, and Dolly Day, “Project Book!” to provide take home reading materials to build the home-to-school connection and ensure reading success for all students, and “Levels to Success,” to allow students who are reading below or just at grade level to build effective reading and writing skills; Ellen Jaeger, “Career Exploration & Development,” to introduce career awareness and explore the connection between classroom learning and future career choices at an early age.

Sorenson and Dalton elementary schools: Nancy Colburn, “Monet, Math & the Mona Lisa,” to provide opportunities for students to extend their knowledge of art, build visual skills, and compliment all areas of the curriculum using games, books, and visual aids.

Fernan Elementary: Barbara Crow and Linda Bennett,”News Currents & News Matters,” to provide weekly filmstrips and video that present world events in a problem-solving and critical thinking format; Pamela Argue-Kiefer and Brooke Ziehnert, “Global Consciousness & Cultural Awareness II,” to provide experiences that will develop an understanding and appreciation of the rich diversity of customs and contributions from the many cultures in America; Teri Burch, “The 8th Intelligence, ‘Nature”’, to set up vivaquarium center as a resource for the studies of plants and animals; Jodi Vershum, “Simple as ABC,” to motivate students to learn the alphabet and word building strategies with different teaching techniques; Bette Price and Judy Eichelberger, “Readers, Writers & Parents Learning Together,” to enhance a parent training program for parents to assist their children in reading and writing at home and as volunteers in the classroom.

Dalton Gardens Elementary: Nancy Nuttelman and Joann House, “S.M.A.R.T. (Start Making a Reader Today),” to provide materials to enhance literacy development by using volunteers as trained tutors.

Winton Elementary: Nancy Muller, Ann Porter Brown, and Kim Duncan, “The Adventure Continues,” for students to develop a sense of the world outside their community by taking them on a tour of many countries.
