Robbers Make Off With Military Payroll

Compiled From Wire Services

In a brazen attack Thursday, four robbers killed a military paymaster only 100 yards from the entrance to an air force base and made off with the payroll for about 5,000 people.

The men, armed with assault rifles, shot the paymaster 12 times before taking his money and fleeing, the Jalisco state attorney general said in a statement.

Jose Ramon Ruiz Reyes, 35, died later at a nearby hospital.

The attack took place just after noon, 100 yards from the entrance to the main air force base at Guadalajara, Mexico’s second-largest city. On both sides of the street are military installations.

Police and soldiers launched a massive search for the culprits.

Officials declined to say how much money was taken.
