Committee To Judge Restored Historic Homes

Attention: All those who just restored a historic home, the Historic Preservation Committee wants to hear from you.

The committee, which is part of the Eastern Washington State Historical Society, will again give awards to recognize outstanding achievements in historic preservation in the Inland Northwest.

To qualify, the structure (it doesn’t have to be a house) must be at least 50 years old, and judges will look at the historical accuracy of the structural and architectural restoration, the overall extent of the project and the degree to which the project influences its neighborhood or community.

Application information is available from Marsha Rooney at the Cheney Cowles Museum, 456-3931, ext. 109, or picked up at the museum, 2316 W. First.

Get your application together fast, though, because the deadline is Sept. 15.

Build it and they will come

It’s never too late or the wrong season to attract wildlife to your backyard. In fact, sometimes winter is the more interesting season to watch the birds, bunnies and deer hang around your feeders.

Need help attracting critters to your yard? There’s a Backyard Wildlife Habitat Program run by the National Wildlife Federation that will provide everything you need to create a wildlife refuge in your yard, even if you live in the city.

An information packet is available for $12.95 and includes a program application, a booklet on planning and planting a habitat, and “The Backyard Naturalist,” a book about one person’s experience.

Information is available from the National Wildlife Federation, PO Box 50281, Hampden Station, Baltimore, MD 21211; (410) 516-6583 or on the Web at www.nwf.org.

Take your camera to the park

Get out that camera and start exposing some film. Deadline for a Friends of Manito photo contest is Sept. 8 at 5 p.m. and the amateur division winner gets $200, the professional division winner gets $400.

All photos must be taken at Manito Park (there’s no time restriction, however). In addition to amateur and professional divisions, there are also historical/vintage and youth categories. Some entries will be displayed at the City Hall Chase Gallery late this year.

For an application with complete rules, call Kerry Wiltzius, Friends of Manito coordinator, 456-8038.
