The Slice Contest Offers Pointless Fun
Here’s a chance to show off your sense of humor.
Enter The Slice Question Parody Contest.
It’s easy. All you’ve got to do is come up with a question that captures the spirit of The Slice’s queries while reflecting their occasional absurdity.
Here’s a tip. Make sure your question is both pointless and local.
You know. “If a killer whale found its way into the Spokane River and died, what percentage of Inland Northwest newcomers would blame it on the fact that Spokane is too in love with its past?”
Entries must be in writing. And they need to arrive at Slice Headquarters by 5 p.m. on Aug. 29. Include a daytime phone number.
There will be prizes. Good luck.
They see it all: People who go for a walk after dinner are the ones who really know their neighborhoods.
Old growth: The North Side’s D.K. Niblock has an oak that measures 132 inches around.
Inga and Rod Lord, who live at Deer Lake in Stevens County, have a tamarack next to their storage shed that’s 109 inches around. (They sent snapshots of Inga measuring it.)
Laura Kowalkowski’s pearly whites have gotten out of jail: The 12-year-old Pomeroy girl recently got her braces off. And Stacey Lesser, her cousin in Cheney, thinks it would be a hoot if lots and lots of people commented on this development.
Found next to a driveway near Manito Park: One turquoise-blue Brunswick Crown Jewel bowling ball inscribed with “Bob.”
Reading the fine print: Julie Sanborn thinks it might be nice if US West supplied magnifying glasses to be used with the new phone books.
One of Katy O’Callaghan’s early experiences in Spokane after moving from Seattle: She was third in line at a store where a man who looked nearly destitute came up about $3 short when trying to pay for a wallet. The woman second in line quietly offered to make up the difference.
Slice answers: Pamela Stark suggested “Eddy Engine” as an idea for a Spokane-based toy action figure. He works on his V-8 every Saturday, starting at 7 a.m.
And an amusement park ride based on Elaine Dishman’s life would be called the Ups and Downs.
Today’s Slice question: Who holds the record for the most times leaving Spokane and then moving back?
, DataTimes MEMO: The Slice appears Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Write The Slice at P.O. Box 2160, Spokane, WA 99210; call (509) 459-5470; fax (509) 459-5098. We saw an ad for an alarm clock that wakes you up with the sounds of B-17 engines and machine-gun fire. (The ad didn’t specifiy that it was a Flying Fortress patched up in Spokane.)
