Store, Protect Tools In Do-It-Yourself Chest
Here’s a timely project for anytime of year. With this precision tool chest, do-it-yourselfers can give their tools a workout and have a nice place to store them afterwards.
The project features 13 drawers topped by a large storage compartment, providing plenty of room to keep tools safe, dry, organized and within easy reach. Details such as felt-lined drawers, rubber feet and brass knobs, handles, latches and corner protectors add to the durability of the tool chest and enhance the project’s classic appeal.
Best of all, this tool chest is inexpensive to build: two sheets of plywood yield most of the project’s pieces. Other materials include a small piece of standard lumber, brass hardware, felt, rubber feet, nails, glue and finish.
Although measurements and cuts must be precise in order for the drawers to fit properly, the actual construction of the project is straightforward. Simply lay out and cut out the pieces, assemble the drawers, assemble the chest and add hardware and finish of choice.
The completed tool chest measures 24 inches long by 20 inches tall by 12 inches deep.
The Precision Tool Chest plan, No. 788, is $7.95 and includes step-by-step instructions with 13 photos, exploded diagrams and a complete shopping list and cutting schedule.
Create a companion piece for the precision tool chest with a workbench plan, No. 92, for $6.95. A catalog picturing hundreds of projects is $3.95. Prices include postage and handling (for first-class mail, add $1 per item up to $3 maximum).
