Local Junior Golfers Find Themselves Trailing In Colorado Tournament

Spokane golfers were well off the pace after two rounds of the IZZO Colorado Junior Roundup golf tournament at Legacy Ridge Golf Course in Westminster, Colo.

Jared Herling was at 7-over-par 151 after a 1-over 73 Thursday following Wednesday’s opening 78. He was 13 shots back of leader Damian Hale of Jensen Beach, Fla., in the boys 15-18 division.

In the girls 15-18 division, Bridget Johnson followed an opening 82 with an 83 for 165, 18 behind leader Nancy Abiecunas of Fort Collins, Colo.

Swimming

Jay Benner, a former member of the U.S. National Open Water Swim Team, resigned as head coach of the Pullman Swim Club to become head coach of the Tacoma Swim Club.

Benner was also the assistant coach of the Washington State women’s team and had coached the boy’s team at Pullman High from 1989-94.

A member of U.S. Open Water team from 1994-96, he won a 21K open water swim in Hungary and a 26K open water swim in Greece this year, setting a course record in the latter.
