Associated Press

Ricky Bones pitched a seven-hitter and rookie Jed Hansen drove in four runs Tuesday night to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 9-2 victory and a doubleheader split with the Baltimore Orioles.

Chili Davis homered twice as the Royals snapped Baltimore’s four-game winning streak.

In the first game, Lenny Webster hit a three-run homer to key a six-run third inning as the Orioles won 12-9.

After giving up a single to Brady Anderson on the second pitch of the game, Bones (3-4) retired 16 straight before Mike Bordick singled with one out in the sixth.

The former Spokane Indians right-hander, obtained on June 26 for cash from Milwaukee, took a shutout into the ninth before Jeff Reboulet hit a two-run homer.

Phillips has backing

In an effort to get Tony Phillips back on the field, the Major League Baseball Players Association filed a grievance seeking to overturn his suspension.

Phillips, facing a felony charge of cocaine possession, was suspended indefinitely Monday by the Anaheim Angels. Arbitrator Richard Bloch will hear the case today in New York.

In an extraordinary move, the owners’ 10-man executive council convened in a conference call and instructed its lawyers to side with Phillips and the union against the Angels, a source familiar with the meetings said on the condition he not be identified. The council intends to send a letter to the Angels, informing them the suspension runs counter to the owners’ drug policy.

Clearing the bases

New York pitcher David Cone was placed on the 15-day disabled list with mild tendinitis in his right shoulder… . Albert Belle, in a 22-for-133 slump, told reporters the White Sox never would have been dismantled if he had been hitting better… . Anaheim’s Chuck Finley left after 2-2/3 innings because he sprained his left wrist in a fall while backing up home plate.
