Mcgwire Spoils Glavine’s Night

Associated Press

Mark McGwire hit a tying, two-run homer in the ninth inning and Delino DeShields homered leading off the 12th Friday night, giving the St. Louis Cardinals a 3-2 win over the visiting Atlanta Braves.

Tom Glavine, trying for his 150th career win, shut out St. Louis on two singles for eight innings. But Ray Lankford singled to start the ninth and McGwire followed with his fourth home run in four games. McGwire, who also walked four times, hit his fifth homer for St. Louis and 39th overall.

DeShields opened the 12th against rookie Mike Cather (0-3) with his career-high 11th home run.

It was the first homer allowed by Cather in 19-1/3 innings in the majors.

Reds 5, Dodgers 3 Los Angeles

Mike Remlinger recovered from a shaky start to pitch six strong innings and hit a three-run double as well.

The Reds loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth and Remlinger cleared them to give his team a 4-3 lead with his second career hit.

Marlins 6, Pirates 5 Miami

Edgar Renteria’s bases-loaded infield single with one out in the ninth inning capped a two-run rally and Florida beat Pittsburgh despite stranding 16 baserunners.

Renteria’s slow high-hopper glanced off the glove of hard-charging second baseman Tony Womack near the mound, allowing Gregg Zaun to score without a throw.

Giants 6, Expos 2 San Francisco

Slumping Barry Bonds passed his father on San Francisco’s career home run list and drove in three runs.

Bonds’ 29th homer was his 187th for the Giants, one more than Bobby Bonds hit. Barry Bonds has 363 career home runs overall. Just 2 for 35 in his previous 10 games, he went 3 for 4. Jeff Kent, appealing a three-game suspension handed down earlier in the day, also homered for the Giants.

Phillies 5, Astros 1 Houston

Rico Brogna homered twice and drove in four runs.

Brogna hit a solo homer off Chris Holt (7-9) in the fourth and a three-run drive off Russ Springer in the ninth. Curt Schilling (13-10) struck out 10, reaching double digits for the 13th time this season and 24th lifetime.

Padres 5, Cubs 1 San Diego

Sterling Hitchcock pitched a four-hitter for his first complete game in two seasons.

Hitchcock (8-7) struck out three and walked none in his first complete game since Sept. 20, 1995, when he pitched for Seattle against Toronto.

Rockies 6, Mets 2 Denver

Larry Walker came out of a deep slump with a two-run homer and Vinny Castilla hit his 30th homer of the season.

Walker’s 36th homer matched his career high and stopped an 0-for-16 slump, which had equaled his season-high. His batting average is at .376.

Suspensions

Jeff Kent of the San Francisco Giants was suspended for three games and Tyler Houston of the Chicago Cubs was banned for two for their role in a brawl Wednesday.

N.L. President Len Coleman also fined both players an undisclosed amount. The players’ association is appealing both penalties.
