Heat Sweep Doubleheader, Earn Top Seed For Title Round

One Spokane baseball team swept its doubleheader while the other managed a split in the Pride of America Tournament at McEuen Field in Coeur d’Alene Tuesday.

The Spokane Heat clinched the No. 1 seed going into Thursday’s championship round with its two wins over Baseball Academy of Oregon, 21-6 and 10-0.

Meanwhile, Spokane Ice defeated Prosser 7-3 in the opening game of a doubleheader before dropping the second game 21-8 in five innings. The Ice will be seeded third, behind BAO.

The Heat pounded out 21 hits to defeat BAO in the first game and got a strong pitching effort from Tucker Urdahl, who threw a one-hitter, to take the second contest.

In the Ice’s win, Josh Sheffield was 3 for 4 with three RBIs, including a two-run homer in the third inning.

The championship round will be played Thursday and Friday in Coeur d’Alene, with the title game at Seafirst Stadium Saturday at 8 p.m.

Golf

Five area golfers were victorious in first-round match-play competition Tuesday at the 43rd annual Pacific Northwest Amateur Championships at the Skagit Golf and Country Club in Burlington, Wa.

The winners were Robert Selland, Wandermere Golf Course; Matt Kodama, Wandermere; Jared Herling, Downriver; Corey Prugh, Manito; and Reid Hatley, Manito. Josh Sicilia, representing Wandermere, was defeated in his match.
