Hit The Trail With Handy Talkabout
Q. I’m looking for a light, powerful 2-way radio to use while backpacking off-trail in the wet dark forests of the Olympic Peninsula.
My friends and I like to split up to look for cool stuff like trees and elk, but we’d like to be able to contact each other if the need arises.
Any recommendations?

Gear Guy: Your best bet is probably a Motorola Talkabout Plus. This nifty little radio goes for $150 (each) and has a range of up to two miles, provided there isn’t a mountain in the way.
It’s sturdy, light and best of all, waterproof. I can’t guarantee you’ll keep in touch in all conditions, but it beats hollering at each other.
Q. I am trying a pair of Merrell Superlights around the house. The fit seems great except a seam on the lightly padded tongue is causing some irritation on my ankle.
What do you think of the construction of this boot? Could this be a break-in problem? Any alternative favorites in a medium to lightweight boot?
I am going to be wearing it 20 straights days this fall in the Himalayas.

Gear Guy: Boots are funny things. A seam or bump that some people don’t notice will be felt by someone else whose foot has a slightly different shape. Then again, I’m holding a pair of Superlights in my hand right now and can’t find a seam that might be the culprit.
What are you wearing for socks? I’d suggest a light liner sock with a light or mid-weight hiking sock over it.
That should offer enough padding against any small seams the Merrell has that are getting to you. It may also be something that goes away as the boot breaks in more.
In general, I think the Superlights are a first-rate light backpacking boot.
They’re cut just a bit low for my taste, but are comfortable and functional. They should be fine for your Himalaya trip.
