Mead Woman Earns WSU Business Honors

Dana Sommers, a 1993 graduate of Mead High School, was selected as commencement speaker and awarded the 1997 Outstanding Economics Graduate for the Washington State University College of Business and Economics.

Sommers graduated Suma Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the Honors Program.

She is the daughter of Dave and Deanna Sommers of Spokane

Marine Corps Maj. Patrick Kelleher graduated from the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Va., and is a regional support officer with the Space Command at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colo.

He is the son of Raymond and Catherine Kelleher, Spokane, and a 1976 graduate of Gonzaga Prep.

Pullman’s Lincoln Middle School Students of the Month for May were sixth-grader Ketner Catts, son of Dana Catts; seventh-grader Fiona Horton, daughter of Sally and Joe Horton; and eighth-grader Andy Kicza, son of Diane and John Kicza.

The winners each received a certificate, a student-designed T-shirt and $20, half of which goes to a cause of the students’ choice.

Sam Dietz and Don George, both of Pullman, were honored by the Washington state Hunter Education Program for their longtime volunteer service.

Daniel Kuney, a spring graduate of St. George’s School, received a $6,500 Presidential Scholarship/ Achievement Award from The University of Redlands (Calif.), where he will enroll as a freshman in the fall. The award is renewable for three years of undergraduate study.

Kuney, son of Jeff and Shelly Kuney, will play basketball for the Redlands Bulldogs.

Matthew Crotty was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant through the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps when he graduated this spring from Gonzaga University.

He is the son of Robert and Nancy Crotty, Spokane.

Michelle Conley and Theodore Carroll, both spring graduates of Gonzaga Prep, received The Bishop Skylstad Award for their excellence in theory and practice of their religion.

Emily Meyer, Spokane, was awarded a $500 Member Scholarship from Lutheran Brotherhood for academic excellence, church and community involvement and leadership.

Meyer was one of 740 from a field of 2,710 applicants to receive the national award.

She will attend the University of Washington in the fall.
