Giants Roar Back To Remain In First
Jose Vizcaino hit a game-tying homer in the eighth and the visiting San Francisco Giants sent 11 batters to the plate in a five-run 10th inning Sunday, giving them an 8-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.
Vizcaino hit a two-run homer, his third of the season, with two outs in the eighth off Stan Belinda to tie it 3-3. The Giants then completed their comeback from a three-run deficit by rallying against closer Jeff Shaw (3-1).
Cubs 4, Dodgers 3 (12) Chicago
Sammy Sosa hit a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the 12th inning as Chicago Cubs rallied to stun Los Angeles.
Sosa hit the first pitch from Dodgers reliever Todd Worrell (1-3) high over the fence in left field for his 23rd home run.
Worrell retired the first two batters in the 12th, but then walked Mark Grace before Sosa delivered his game-winning homer.
Pirates 8, Rockies 4 Pittsburgh
Kevin Polcovich’s bad-hop ground ball double traveled barely 100 feet but scored two runs for Pittsburgh.
Larry Walker was 3 for 4 to finish the series 10 for 16 with four homers, three doubles, six RBIs and seven runs scored, raising his average to a M.L.-leading .393.
Expos 6, Padres 3 Montreal
Pedro Martinez pitched a three-hitter for his major league-leading 10th complete game and Doug Strange and Darrin Fletcher hit two-run homers.
Martinez (13-5) struck out 10 in his second straight complete game and dropped his ERA to a major league-lowest 1.76.
Phillies 10, Cardinals 1 Philadelphia
Mark Leiter pitched a seven-hitter in his first complete game in almost a year. Mark McGwire went 1 for 9 in his first series with St. Louis.
Marlins 8, Braves 4 Miami
Slumping Devon White had four hits and drove in three runs, and Florida took its third of four with N.L. rival Atlanta.
Alex Fernandez (13-8) tied a career high with 10 strikeouts in eight innings, and won his third consecutive start.
Astros 3, Mets 2 Houston
Greg McMichael’s 0-2 pitch hit Luis Gonzalez with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth to force home the winning run.
With two outs in the ninth, Craig Biggio singled to center and stole second before McMichael (7-9) walked pinch-hitter Thomas Howard and Jeff Bagwell to load the bases.
Clearing the bases
Tony Gwynn has hit safely in 13 straight games, going 18 for 45 (.400). … The Pirates’ Kevin Young will miss at least a month and possibly the rest of the year with an injured thumb. … The Mets’ Pete Harnisch, who started on opening day and has not pitched since because of depression, is tentatively scheduled to return to the rotation Tuesday.
