Dear Heloise: Please tell people that if they have hardwood floors under their carpets, not to use ice cubes to remove furniture dents. The melted water can damage the hardwood floor forever. - Betty Rauscher, Bellaire, Texas

Good suggestion, and thank you for pointing it out. In this case, a few blasts from a steam iron held an inch or so from the carpet should do the trick. Heloise

Dear Heloise: I recycle all I can. I cut old tube socks down the middle and use as cleaning rags and even dishcloths. When I wash dishes, I like a handful of dishcloth, and some of the real long socks I cut into four pieces. Mary F. Gonzales, Roswell, N.M. xxxx
