Hints From Heloise

King Features Syndicate

Dear Heloise: Several years ago you printed a method to clean silver by using a plastic pan and foil, plus something else, which I have forgotten. Please reprint this, as I would love to use it.

I use many, many of your hints and read your column every day. -Betty Koblmeyer, Indianapolis

I’d be more than happy to reprint this great hint for you and any other readers who may be interested in this shortcut to clean tarnished silver.

Cover the bottom of a glass or plastic pan with aluminum foil. Pour in about 2 quarts of boiling water and add 2 teaspoons of baking soda, then stir to dissolve.

Drop the silver pieces into the liquid and make sure each piece of silverware is touching. Voila! The tarnish will slowly disappear before your eyes. Rinse and buff dry.

Caution: Don’t use this method on silver plate, hollow-handle or antique pieces because it may damage them. - Heloise
