Mead Hopes To Finish At Least Second In League
Girls golf
Mead coach Eleen Northcutt and her daughter Sara will have to make the most of this girls golf season. It will be their last together.
Sara, a state veteran, will remain at Mead next year for her senior year. Mom will become coach of the girls team at the district’s new high school.
“I’ll be at Mount Spokane and take the coaching position with me,” said Eleen. “With my daughter at Mead can you imagine what it will be like around home?”
This is, said Northcutt, a rebuilding year for the Panthers, even with her daughter and defending state champion Britney Holt back. Jennifer Balcerak is the only other returnee.
With that, Northcutt figures the team can finish second in league and do damage at state, where the team placed third last year.
“I expect to take those three to state,” said Northcutt. “Three strong players can win it.”
Rounding out the Panther team are junior Katie Horobiowski, sophomore Sandra Bailey and freshmen Molly Pinch and Angela Raymond.
Graduation haunts Shadle
Third with a 12-4 record last year, the Highlanders must replace a trio of graduated three-year starters.
“We’ll be respectable, but have no state kids,” said coach Randy Lothspeich.
Returning are juniors Lindsay Turner, Jennifer Miller and Kelly McGinnis.”
“They’ll probably be my top three kids in that order,” Lothspeich said.
Other returnees are juniors Heather Smith, Stephanie Rich and sophomore Desiree Cooper.
“They came in as beginners, learned the game and are solid,” said Lothspeich.
Bullpups in upper division
Gonzaga Prep’s girls team expects to be an upper division finisher in the Greater Spokane League.
“I’m not sure if they could go head to head with Ferris or Mead, but we shouldn’t do worse than third,” said coach Phil Kuder. “Then again, we could surprise someone.”
The G-Prep girls are led by senior Jennifer Murphy, who qualified for state a year ago.
Other seniors on the team include Lisa Zimmer, Heather Wallace, and North Side resident Stephanie Warn.
Emily Brajcich, Esme Carson and Melissa Murphy round out a Bullpup team.
NC loses two solid players
Although the Indians have a good turnout of golfers, two players whom coach Dave Hall figured to be in the top 30 in league did not return.
“We took a big hit,” he said.
Still, the team brings back senior Jennifer Benson, juniors Katy Larson and Jennifer Bonner, and sophomore Kristy Campbell.
Newcomers include junior Cassie Harris, sophomores Amanda Folsom and Cassandra Dolar and freshman Bren Daniely who are vying for varsity spots.
Pirates continue to build
With its entire varsity back and the addition of two sophomores, Rogers continues to build a program under coach Larry Williamson.
“Many never played golf until last year,” he said. “They are coming back trying to get better every day.”
Top two golfers in his lineup, senior Jamaica Vandolah and junior Linsey Sutton return along with senior Angel Aviles and sophomores Jennifer Baldwin, Kelly Strain, JoAnn Hill and Tasha Foghorn.
Sophomores Chana Bonnet and Courtney Norman show top-six potential.
