Rain Delays Canadian Open

Wind and rain, the remnants of Hurricane Fran, washed out the third round of the Canadian Open in Oakville, Ontario.

Officials said the tournament would be shortened to 54 holes and completed today, weather permitting.

More rain was forecast, however.

Steve Ross, executive director of the Royal Canadian Golf Association, said no decision had been made about shortening the championship to 36 holes. If that does happen, however, second-round leader Scott Dunlap would be declared the winner.

At Augusta, Mo., Bunky Henry birdied Nos. 17 and 18 in a 6-under-par 65 and held a two-stroke lead after two rounds of the Senior PGA Tour’s inaugural Boone Valley Classic.

Henry’s 11-under 131 total is two shots ahead of St. Louis native Hale Irwin, who shot a course-record 63 at the 6,670-yard Boone Valley Golf Club.

Gibby Gilbert is another shot back at 134 after a 66, while Gary Player and Vicente Fernandez, a first-round co-leader, were tied at 135 after a 66 and a 70, respectively.

Chris Johnson shot a 7-under-par 65 for a course record 36-hole total of 134 and a one-stroke lead over first-round leader Dottie Pepper in the Safeway LPGA Golf Championship at Portland, Ore.

Johnson’s 134 was one stroke better than the previous record held by Kris Monaghan in 1987 and Tina Barrett in 1992 on the 6,294-yard Columbia-Edgewater Country Club course.

Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum, Idaho, shot a 74 and was at 146. Robin Walton of Clarkston shot 76 for a 150 total and missed the cut.

Mike Hamblin of Twin Falls, Idaho, took the lead after the second round of the Montana Open golf tournament at Larchmont Golf Course in Missoula.

Hamblin shot a 3-under-par 69 to go along with a 67 on Friday. His total of 8-under 136 was two shots better than Helena amateur Bill Dunn, who carded a 70. Randy Buckenberger of Rathdrum, Idaho, was the only local golfer in the top ten at 139. Results for other area golfers were not available.
