No. 2 Vols Hold Off Ucla; Southern Cal Whips Illini

Associated Press

Pac-10

The final big play of the game belonged to Peyton Manning, and his 53-yard touchdown pass to Joey Kent with 6:30 left gave the No. 2 Volunteers a 35-20 victory over UCLA on Saturday night at Knoxville, Tenn.

Manning, who threw for two TDs and ran for two more, fought off a relentless pass rush and finished off the Bruins with a play fake that new coach Bob Toledo won’t soon forget. Manning was 16 of 28 for 288 yards.

With the Vols clinging to a 28-20 lead after Cade McNown’s 88-yard touchdown pass to Danny Farmer with 9:41 left in the game, Manning finally hooked up with Kent, his favorite receiver.

A Neyland Stadium record crowd of 106,297 was looking for a game of big plays from the Vols, but the Bruins produced a few of their own.

UCLA, in its first game for Toledo after 20 years under Terry Donahue, stayed close with two long scores.

(19) Southern Cal 55, Illinois 3

At Champaign, Ill., LaVale Woods ran for two touchdowns, and Southern Cal kept Illinois out of the end zone.

The Trojans (1-1) scored on long passes, short runs, field goals and a blocked punt on the way to giving the Illini (0-2) their worst loss in the 1990s.

Southern Cal corrected the pass protection problems that contributed to a season-opening loss to Penn State and exploited a multitude of miscues from a young and overworked Illini defense.

Trojans quarterbacks Brad Otten and Matt Koffler were 15 of 23 with no interceptions and 428 yards for the game, the most against Illinois since 1985, when Purdue had 464 yards in the air.

Illinois also failed to score a TD in a 20-8 loss at Michigan a week earlier.

Chris Miller set the tone for the game on the first play from scrimmage, catching a 25-yard pass under the Illini secondary. The Trojans exploited this Illini weak spot throughout the game, including an 84-yard TD pass from Otten to Miller in the first quarter and a 13-yard scoring shot to Marvin Powell in the second quarter.

Adding insult to injury, second-string quarterback Koffler threw a 97-yard touchdown pass to freshman wide receiver Jay Soward with 5:41 left in the game. It was the longest pass play ever against Illinois at Memorial Stadium.

(22) Iowa 21, Arizona 20

At Iowa City, Iowa, Sedrick Shaw ran for 115 yards and a touchdown, and the Hawkeyes used an opportunistic defense to win their season opener.

Arizona (1-1) had just one turnover in last week’s win over Texas-El Paso, but the Wildcats self-destructed against the Hawkeyes, with four lost fumbles, an interception and five sacks.

The Hawkeyes scored all of their points off turnovers then chewed up the last 6 minutes with a 15-play drive.

Cal 45, San Jose State 25

At San Jose, Calif., Pat Barnes threw four touchdown passes, and the Bears overcame a slew of penalties to beat San Jose State and give first-year coach Steve Mariucci a victory in his debut.

Barnes completed 19 of 23 passes for 248 yards, and Tarik Smith ran for 186 yards on 36 carries in Cal’s season-opening triumph. The Bears earned their ninth straight victory over the Spartans (0-2).

Utah 17, Stanford 10

At Stanford, Calif., Mike Fouts passed for 222 yards and Utah’s defensive pressure ruined the debut of Stanford quarterback Chad Hutchinson.

Fouts was 18 for 32, including a 28-yard scoring pass to C.J. Johnson, and Chris Fuamatu-Ma’afala added a 3-yard touchdown run as Utah (1-1) took a 17-0 lead.

Hutchinson, a first-round draft pick as a pitcher by the Atlanta Braves who has little football experience, was 23 for 40 for 265 yards. He threw a 9-yard scoring pass to Troy Walters. Stanford is 0-1.
