No. 7 Cougars Crush Dayton U

Seventh-ranked ranked Washington State improved to 5-0 with a 15-11, 15-11, 15-6 win over Dayton University in the first match of the Iowa State Invitational Tournament at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa, Friday.

WSU’s Sarah Silvernail had 17 kills, hitting .417, 17 digs and six blocks. Shannon Wyckoff was the only other Cougar in double-figure kills with 10 and also had 13 digs.

“Dayton’s a good team and when they start playing more together, they’re going to be a real good team,” WSU coach Cindy Fredrick said. “I thought we made some good adjustments today. Our kids moved the block and adjusted to their hitters.”

At Laramie, Wyo., the University of Idaho volleyball team remained unbeaten, routing Chicago State 15-2, 15-3, 15-3 at the University of Wyoming Invitational.

Idaho improved to 4-0 and continues its six-game road trip today against Texas-San Antonio and host Wyoming.

Idaho opted to use reserves for most of the match.

The Vandals had 30 kills to 11 for Chicago State. Louisa Kawulok led UI with eight kills and Jessica Moore had five. Backup setter Lani Kim had 17 assists.

Idaho’s home opener will be at the Vandal Classic next Friday and Saturday.

At Tucson, Ariz., Eastern Washington remained unbeaten with victories over Utah State (15-4, 15-12, 15-7) and Portland (15-12, 11-15, 15-8, 10-15, 15-10) at the Arizona Wildcat Classic.

In the morning match against the Aggies (1-2), Toni Schwinn had a game-high 27 assists and Kim Exner totaled a game-high 16 kills for Eastern (3-0).

In the nightcap against the Pilots (2-3), Schwinn recorded a team-high 62 assists and Exner accounted for a game-high 34 kills.

Portland’s A.M. Blackburn finished with 68 assists.

At Boise, Nicole Lamoure led both games in assists (73, 63) and Jennifer Kubista landed the most kills (28, 27) as Gonzaga swept two matches during the opening day of the Boise State Classic Tournament.

The Bulldogs (4-3) downed Idaho State 15-5, 13-15, 4-15, 16-14, 15-4, avenging last weekend’s loss to the Bengals at the Washington State tourney.

In the second match, GU also needed five games to beat Boise State 11-15, 16-14, 8-15, 15-9, 15-7.

Women’s soccer

Jennifer Tissue scored two unassisted goals and added an assist as Whitworth defeated Simon Fraser at the Simon Fraser Tournament in Burnaby, British Columbia. The loss snapped the Clansmen’s 31-game home winning streak.

The Pirates are 3-0 and have scored 15 goals this year.

Tissue’s first goal was scored at 65:00, tying the game at 2-2. She broke the tie 3 minutes later on a penalty kick.

Men’s soccer

Gonzaga University dominated the second half, but Oregon State University keeper Colin McMillen and his defense held the Bulldogs scoreless in a 3-0 victory at Martin Field in the home opener for Gonzaga.

The Bulldogs (0-2-1) have only one goal this season, a free kick by Simeon Enemuo against UC Santa Barbara.

After an evenly-played first half, the Beavers (2-1) led 1-0 at halftime on Fredrik Kummernes’ free kick at 25:00.

In the second half, the Bulldogs outshot OSU 13-3.

The Bulldogs face Whitman College at home Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will follow the Gonzaga women’s match and West Coast Conference opener at 11 a.m. against fourth-ranked University of Portland.

Softball

Spaghetti Station of Spokane advanced to the third round of the Over-45 National Men’s Slowpitch Tournament at Meridian, Miss.

In its second-round game, Spaghetti Station defeated Smith Graphics of Henderson, Tenn., 18-13.

Spokane’s Greg Hart went 3 for 4, with seven RBIs. He had two home runs and a triple.
