‘Showcase’ Presents Past Decorating Style

FOR THE RECORD: 9-7-96 The toll-free number for the Lane Company is (888) 856-8758. The telephone number listed in Friday’s IN Life section was wrong.

It’s not easy getting glimpses of Victorian-era furnishings all assembled in one room but this weekend there’s opportunity to get full view of a past style of decorating.

The “Period Showcase: The Classic Home Interior” continues through Sunday at the D.C. Corbin Mansion, 507 W. Seventh. The event is a fund-raiser for continuing restoration of the mansion.

Area furniture stores and businesses - Dania, Design Works, Ethan Allen Interiors, Joel, Spears Home Furnishings, Captured Interiors and Faux Touch - lent their wares, apropos to the period, to the exhibit. The “Showcase” is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $3, $2 for seniors and children.

Looking for Cutter furniture

The famed Spokane architect Kirtland Cutter designed more than just beautiful houses. In the tradition of architects, he also designed furniture and furnishings. We’re looking for people who own original Kirtland Cutter-designed furniture for a story we’re working on. If you have such furnishings, call arts writer Elinor Block, 456-5224.

Consumer alert

Those who own a Lane cedar chest manufactured prior to 1987 are asked to contact the manufacturer to have the lock replaced. The locks have posed a safety hazard to young children. For information about lock replacement, call the Lane Company, (800)856-8758.

And now, from HGTV

The folks at America’s home and garden television network offer these tips for making life a little easier:

To prevent the tops of glue tubes from sticking, dab a little petroleum jelly on the tip of the tube before replacing the cap.

Candles will drip less if they are placed in the refrigerator for several hours before you light them.

Finding the right arrangement

A workshop in feng shui, the art of determining the right relationship between a person and furniture arrangement in his or her home, will be held Oct. 27 at Carpenter Hall in Seattle. Preregistration is required; the cost is $600 for the one-day workshop; for a registration form, call the Feng Shui Institute, (407) 589-9900.
