Higgins Of Shadow Named To All-League Soccer Squad
Zane Higgins, who led the Spokane Shadow in scoring, has been named to the United Systems of Independent Soccer Leagues Premier All-League team.
Higgins was one of 11 players chosen from among the 34 Premier League teams.
Higgins scored 11 goals and had 13 assists for 35 points to help the Shadow finish 17-3 in the regular season, the best record among the 85 teams in the three leagues of the USISL He finished in the Premier League top 10 in scoring and points.
The former Medical Lake student was named to the USISL Premier League team of the week five times and was named the overall player of the week once, as well as being selected to play in the midseason All-Star game.
Men’s soccer
Colin Rogerson headed a crossing pass from Casey Deligeannis past Whitworth keeper Matt Yeoman for the winning goal at 88:15 to give Evergreen State College a 2-1 win in the Pirates’ season opener at home.
Lenny Peterson scored Whitworth’s only goal on a put-back at 50:30.
Yeoman recorded eight saves. Geoducks keeper Jason Rojo also stopped eight shots.
Women’s soccer
The fourth-ranked University of Portland women’s soccer team kicks off its season in Eastern Washington this weekend.
The Pilots, who lost to Notre Dame 1-0 in overtime in the NCAA championship game last fall, play at Washington State at noon Saturday and at Gonzaga at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Portland returns nine starters from last year’s team, including sophomore midfielder Kim Stiles, a 1995 Mead graduate. Angela Harrison, who graduated from Gonzaga Prep in the spring, is a back-up keeper for the Pilots.
Softball
The Spokane Inland Empire Softball Hall of Fame will induct 13 people Saturday at the Red Lion Hotel on Sullivan Road in the Spokane Valley.
Players being inducted include Gene “Scooter” Brannon, of Colfax; Dan Curtis, Missoula; Dan Fry, Spokane; Skip Hardenbrook, Kettle Falls; Bill Kramer, Wallace; Larry Paul, Spokane; Bill Reilly, Spokane; Dick Wright, deceased; and Laura Lund, Spokane.
Russ Sharp, who runs Spokane Metro Softball, will be inducted in the manager category. Chris Anderson enters in the umpire category.
Scoot Adams, spouse of the late Bud Adams, enters in the Hall of Honor for her work with softball in the area. Manager Tony Mangano is being inducted posthumously.
Longtime sponsor Jerry Peterson of Jerry’s Coins will be inducted in the sponsor category.
The dinner starts at 7 p.m. with the induction ceremonies planned for 8 p.m. Hank Coplen, a 1985 inductee, will be the master of ceremonies.
Bicycling
The fifth Ride the Runt bike races will be held this weekend at Lookout Pass ski area. The races will be the final event in the Wheelsport Wim Point series which will serve as the National Off Road Bicycle Association (NORBA) regional championship.
Saturday’s events will include the Bunton downhill race and the Thule trials. Sunday’s events include the hammer gel 8.5 mile cross country race, the batwaves bike toss and kids’ off-road racing. For more information:, call Lookout Pass Bike and Ski at 208-777-7701.
Idaho A.D. search
Idaho’s search for an athletic director has been narrowed to four candidates, the university announced on Thursday.
They are: Cincinnati associate A.D. Jim Shaus, Utah assistant A.D. Peter Hart, Pittsburgh A.D. Oval Jaynes and former football coach Bob Stull.
The list of finalists had been six, but Creighton associate A.D. Chris Peterson and Oklahoma State associate A.D. David Martin are no longer under consideration.
Shaus will be the first to interview Tuesday in Moscow. Schedules for the remaining candidates are being finalized. Interviews are expected to last through September and a decision should be made by October.
Shaus has been at Cincinnati for three years. He previously was at Northern Illinois (1992-94) and Oregon (1987-91).
Hart was executive director of Utah’s Crimson Club before being promoted to assistant A.D. in July.
Jaynes has been an administrator for more than 30 years. He has resigned at Pitt, but will continue on until the new A.D. is hired. He was previously A.D. at Colorado State and an assistant A.D. at Auburn.
Stull was an assistant football coach at Washington before taking head coaching jobs at UTEP and Missouri.
He’s been the president/CEO of the boys and girls club of King County in Seattle the last three years.
