Dunlap Takes Lead

Compiled From Wire Services

Scott Dunlap has played some of his best golf in Canada. It might be his ticket to playing in the United States.

Dunlap, fighting to keep his PGA Tour card, shot 8-under-par 64 in the first round of the Canadian Open for a two-stroke lead over Sweden’s Jesper Parnevik.

Tiger Woods, making his second start as a pro, got off to a rocky start, but he rolled in an 8-foot putt for eagle on No. 16, a 516-yard par-5. The three-time U.S. Amateur champ finished at 2-under 70.

Dunlap and Woods have the same goal: to climb to at least 125th on the tour’s money list and avoid the qualifying school. Time is running out. There are just six full-field events left after the Canadian Open.

Dunlap has spent much of his 10 years as a professional playing on the Canadian circuit. He finally earned the right to play on the PGA Tour by finishing 31st in the 1995 tour qualifying tournament.
