Activists Offer Timber Tours

From Staff And Wire Reports

Environmental groups fighting logging of the Cove-Mallard timber sales are offering tours of the next logging area this weekend.

People interested in touring the Lone Park timber sale can meet in the Rosauers grocery store parking lot in Moscow, Idaho at 7 a.m. Saturday. Participants will carpool to the jumpoff point and begin hiking about 1 p.m.

Dinner will be provided at the Cove-Mallard base camp near Dixie, Idaho, Saturday evening. Breakfast also will be offered on Sunday morning before the drive back to Moscow.

Lone Park is an isolated wild area adjacent to the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, the coalition said. It forms the headwaters of Big Mallard Creek and drains the west face of Boston Mountain.

The timber is due to be sold within the next few months, and road building is expected to begin next spring, the coalition said.
