Valenzuela Notches Seventh Win In Row

Fernando Valenzuela won his seventh straight decision, pitching seven scoreless innings Monday night to lead the visiting San Diego Padres over the Philadelphia Phillies 5-1.

Wally Joyner had three hits and drove in three runs as the Padres won for the seventh time in nine games and maintained a 1-0 lead over Los Angeles in the N.L. West.

Valenzuela (12-7), who hasn’t lost since July 14 at Colorado, allowed six hits, struck out two and walked two.

Dodgers 8, Mets 5

New York

Todd Hollandsworth and Eric Karros hit two-run homers as Los Angeles beat New York for its ninth win in 11 games.

Los Angeles, which remained one game behind N.L. West-leading San Diego, took a 4-3 lead when Hollandsworth hit his 10th homer with two outs in the seventh. Hollandsworth was 3 for 5 with three RBIs and is 10 for -23 (.435) during the first seven games of the Dodgers’ road trip.

Todd Hundley hit his 39th homer in the third inning, tying the Mets team record held by Darryl Strawberry (1987 and 1988) and leaving him one behind Roy Campanella’s major-league record for homers by a catcher, set in 1953.

Cards 8, Astros 7 (10)

St. Louis

Willie McGee hit a game-winning single in the 10th inning as St. Louis closed within a half-game of N.L. Central-leading Houston, rallying past the Astros.

St. Louis trailed 7-3 in the fourth.

Alan Benes (13-8), making his first major-league relief appearance, got one out for the win.

Reds 7, Braves 6

Cincinnati

Curtis Goodwin drove in the go-ahead run with a bases-loaded bunt single in the seventh inning as Cincinnati overcame a five-run deficit and beat Atlanta.

Cincinnati fell behind 5-0 in the second inning before rallying for only its third victory in its last 18 games against Atlanta.

Marlins 4, Cubs 3

Miami

Marc Valdes earned his first major-league victory in his 10th career start, leading Florida over Chicago for the Marlins’ ninth win in 10 games.

Rockies 8, Pirates 3

Pittsburgh

Vinny Castilla, Walt Weiss, Dante Bichette and pitcher Kevin Ritz homered and Colorado, proving it has power outside of Coors Field, beat Pittsburgh.

Expos 4, Giants 3 (11)

Montreal

F.P. Santangelo hit a sacrifice fly and Lenny Webster singled home the winning run as Montreal rallied from an 11th-inning deficit to beat San Francisco.

Clearing the bases

Brett Butler said he hopes to be back in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ lineup Friday night when the team starts a homestand against the Pittsburgh Pirates. … San Diego’s Fernando Valenzuela is 16-7 against Philadelphia, winning 10 of his last 11 starts against the Phillies. He hasn’t lost to Philadelphia since May 23, 1989. … Atlanta activated pitcher Steve Avery off the disabled list and said Greg Maddux will have his next start pushed back because of a tender hamstring.
