Quayle Campaigns Near Tacoma On Tate’s Behalf

Associated Press

While Vice President Al Gore was in Seattle and Spokane campaigning for Democrats, former Vice President Dan Quayle lent a hand to the re-election campaign of Republican U.S. Rep. Randy Tate.

Quayle appeared Monday night at a campaign fund-raiser for Tate at the Best Western Executive Inn in this Tacoma suburb.

Tate, regarded by Democrats as one of the most vulnerable GOP freshmen running for re-election, is locked in a tight race with Democrat Adam Smith in the 9th Congressional District.

Quayle poked fun at the Democrats and President Clinton.

“Are you going to let liberal special interests buy this election?” Quayle asked 400 Tate supporters, who paid $50 to $250 apiece to attend. “No!” was the response.

Quayle mused about what it must have been like for Clinton to wake up the morning after the 1994 election to find Republicans had control of Congress.

“He had a humongous headache,” Quayle said. And the message was clear: GOP supporters can continue that headache for the Democratic president if they send people like Tate back to Congress.
