One Boy Injured, Another Arrested In Fight At Ev

Marny Lombard Staff Writer

A fight between two 15-year-olds at East Valley High School last week left one student with cuts and bumps, resulted in the longterm suspension of the other participant, and the loss of morning break-time for all students at the school.

The aggressor in the Friday fight knocked the other boy to the ground in a school hallway and kicked him in the head several times, according to the police report.

He was arrested on a charge of fourth-degree assault and was referred to the Juvenile Detention Center, the report stated.

The student who was knocked down suffered facial cuts and bumps on his head. He was treated and released at Valley Hospital and Medical Center, Lt. John Simmons said. The student’s father told police he wanted to press charges, the police report stated.

A large crowd of students gathered, making it difficult for the school’s two security officers and administrators to stop the fight.

“It was something that had been building for some time. It turned into a real one-sided thing,” acknowledged East Valley High School vice principal Ray Stookey. “It wasn’t a pleasant thing.”

He added that high school fights are not unique to East Valley.

“We don’t have very many of them, so we make a big deal out of the ones that do happen.”

Stookey met with student leaders Monday and announced that he would take away morning breaks for two days, as a way of holding accountable those students who joined the throng of spectators.

“They were creating unsafe conditions,” he said.
