Sonics Head Overseas Without Kemp

Tacoma News Tribune

The Seattle SuperSonics left for Europe on Tuesday evening without four-time All-Star power forward Shawn Kemp, who has been absent from training camp since it opened on Oct. 1.

According to a source close to Kemp, “The Reign Man” plans to continue his conditioning program during the team’s overseas trip, then re-join the Sonics when they return to Seattle next week.

The source said Monday that Kemp agreed to return to the team following a meeting with owner Barry Ackerley.

But Sonics president and general manager Wally Walker said Tuesday that nothing has changed.

The defending Western Conference champion Sonics play exhibition games against the Indiana Pacers on Friday in Berlin and Sunday in Seville, Spain. They play Portland in the Spokane Arena on Oct. 24.

Veteran swingman Nate McMillan is questionable for both games in Europe. Pain in McMillan’s left hamstring flared up and kept him out of the first two exhibition games, then eased, allowing him to play 16 minutes Monday in an 89-83 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Several players vying for roster spots have impressed Walker in the first three preseason games, making upcoming roster trims difficult.

In Saturday’s victory over the defending NBA champion Chicago Bulls, Walker was pleased with Pig Miller’s 10-rebound effort and the poise shown by rookie point guard Drew Barry.

Swingman Larry Stewart’s defensive performance on Monday drew praise from Walker as did swingman Sherell Ford’s overall play, including a couple steals, offensive rebounds and assists. Swingman Greg Graham played well Monday.
