Hazel Carpenter Spokane

Hazel I. (Simpson) Carpenter is 100 years old today.

She was born Oct. 10, 1896, in Plainview, Neb., and moved to Spokane in 1903. The family awoke that July 4 to snow.

She married Ross T. Carpenter in 1927; he died in 1971.

The couple owned a ranch in Miles, Wash., about 25 miles north of Davenport. Although she now lives with her son, Charles, in the Valley, she still visits the ranch.

When the former Miss Simpson graduated from high school, she became a teacher. After her marriage, she was a homemaker and caretaker of her parents.

The Carpenters had two children: Marvin R. Carpenter, Glendale, Ariz.; and Charles. She has four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A niece attributes her longevity to “hard work caring for others.”
