George, Hawks May Meet Again

Larry Stone Seattle Times

This time, Jeff George said, it all happened too fast.

But even though George rejected Seattle’s $30 million offer and foiled a quarterback trade with Atlanta for Rick Mirer, his dealings with the Seahawks might not be finished.

In fact, George’s agent, Leigh Steinberg, predicted Tuesday night the sides will talk again - possibly when George is released by the Falcons, a move that is expected within two weeks.

“I was extremely impressed with the way the Seattle organization handled things,” Steinberg said. “It wouldn’t surprise me if down the line the parties got back together.”

Having failed to work out a trade for George, the Falcons have no choice but to release the controversial quarterback, who still has two weeks to serve on a suspension.

If and when the Falcons release George - and they might choose to let him serve out his suspension - he becomes a free agent once he passes through the formality of a one-day waiver process.

The Oakland Raiders - and possibly the Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles - are expected to pursue George. And that’s when the Seahawks could re-enter the fray.

“It’s my understanding I’m going to be released,” George told CNN. “I’ll deal with that when the time comes. When opportunity comes knocking, I’ll be ready… . Who knows? I may end up a Seahawk.”

George could sit out the rest of the season and play the free-agent market in the off-season.

Randy Mueller, the Seahawks’ vice-president of player personnel, wouldn’t specifically address the issue of another run at George, but he didn’t rule one out, either.
