Ecumenical Food Bank Open

Nina Culver Correspondent

The Mead Area Ecumenical Food Outlet opened this week to serve the area’s needy.

The new food bank is located in an old portable classroom located behind Farwell Elementary, 13005 N. Crestline.

The food bank serves people whose zip code is 99005, 99021, 99218 or 99208. It is open from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays. Hours could be expanded in the future, director Rory-anne Kudney said.

Donations from area churches have helped the food bank open, Kudney said. “I have many people helping me,” she said. “It’s just a community effort.”

The project started in January when the Spokane Food Bank approached Mead United Methodist Church about opening a food bank in the area. Preparations have been under way ever since.

The new food bank will fill a void that has existed since another food bank serving the area closed about four years ago.

“There is such a need in this community,” says Kudney.

Anyone interested in donating food or money to the new food bank can call 466-7068.
