Big Brothers And Sisters Name Volunteers Of Month

Linda Metcalfe and Luanne Castoldi were named Volunteers of the Month for September by Big Brothers and Sisters of Spokane.

Metcalfe, a big sister for 3-1/2 years, and Heidi Mott, her little sister, have canoed, taken a train ride, shopped for antiques and browsed through used bookstores.

During the past three years, when they were first matched, Castoldi and Lindsay Roberts have shopped, taken trips to Silverwood, Manito Park and various lakes, and baked lots of cookies.

Samuel Bishop, Spokane, received a $1,000 scholarship from the publishers of Who’s Who Among American High School Students.

Bishop, who has received many other awards for academic and leadership achievements, will attend the University of Washington.

Guy Perham, Spokane, was elected vice president of Beta Theta Pi International Fraternity at its convention in Palm Springs, Calif.

Perham, a retired Air Force colonel, has been a volunteer district chief for fraternity chapters at Whitman College and Eastern Washington, Washington State and Idaho universities.

Marti Wittkopp-Reinland was named to the President’s Honor Roll at Washington State University for the 1996 spring and summer semesters, as well as the National Dean’s list. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Wittkopp Jr., Spokane.

Linsey Scott, a June graduate of Jenkins High School in Chewelah, Wash., won third place in the national 1996 Essay Contest on Korea.

Her essay was chosen from among the 2,000 received from schools across the United States.

Scott’s theme was “Korea As I Know It.”

The contest, designed to encourage a greater understanding of Korea, is co-sponsored by the Korean Information Center of the Republic of Korea and the Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry USA Inc. Scott is now a freshman at Northwest Nazarene College in Napa, Idaho.

Rosalie King, Nine Mile Falls, was elected national chairman for the Western Conference of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars at its national convention in Louisville, Ky.

King is a member of the Deer Park Memorial 3067.

Angela Harrison, a 1996 graduate of Gonzaga Prep, has joined the woman’s soccer team at the University of Portland. She will play goalkeeper for the Portland Pilots and will major in biology.

Jodi Smith, a sophomore at Sprague (Wash.) High School, recently completed the requirements to earn the Bronze Congressional Award.

To qualify, Smith completed 103 hours of community service; 69 hours to improve her horse-showing skills and abilities for personal development; 51 hours of improvement on basketball skills for physical development; and a two-night, camp-out rafting trip.

The Congressional Award is a non-competitive, goal-oriented achievement program.

Smith is the daughter of Jay and Janet Smith, Sprague.

Judith Dalton, educational supervisor at ITT Technical Institute in Spokane, was appointed treasurer of the national board of directors for the American Design Drafting Association.
