Spring Surge Puts West Valley Over The Top For All-Sports Trophy
West Valley High School teams won or shared six of nine spring sports league championships and won its third consecutive Frontier League All-Sports trophy.
The Eagles scored 250.3 points in 17 sports, based on a system that awards 20 points for first place on down to 5 points for seventh.
WV trailed East Valley by 10 points after eight sports entering spring competition, but pulled away with an impressive effort.
The Eagles won boys and girls track, softball and boys tennis league titles outright and tied for first in soccer and baseball. The Knights finished second with 225.8 points.
University High was third in the Greater Spokane League by winning gymnastics and softball, tying for first in wrestling and finishing second in the league in girls cross country, boys and girls track and girls tennis.
Central Valley finished fifth overall. CV won football, finished second in boys basketball and baseball and placed third in five other sports.
Scholar-athlete honorees for the Valley schools this year were Rick Giampietri and Melissa Sherwood at Central Valley, Chris Henderson and Linsay Porter at East Valley, Jeff Hollenbach and Sally Jamison at University, Joe Bonner and Jolie Jensen at West Valley.
The designation is based on academics, community participation and school sports. All were two and three sport athletes in their respective schools.
Henderson, Hollenbach and Bonner are completing their careers as state track participants this weekend. Jamison and Jensen are playing in state softball tournaments.
All-Frontier tennis
Four West Valley and two East Valley tennis players were named to the All-Frontier League tennis team and their coaches were honored as well.
Rani Johnson of WV and Sharon Wentz of East Valley made the girls team. EV’s Aaron Alteneder was girls coach of the year.
On the boys team were Dennis Winters from East Valley, Bryan Foss, Seth Mork and Keli Heidenson of West Valley. Wally Heidenson, Keli’s dad, was boys coach of the year.
Softball spring fling
A free fastpitch softball pitching clinic will highlight this year’s annual Spokane Valley Girls Softball Assoc. Spring Fling, Sat. June 1.
From 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at the East Valley Middle School, this gathering is prelude to the upcoming youth season.
The pitching clinic is 10 a.m. until noon, followed by a barbeque, then a batting clinic from 2-4 p.m.
Teams can play three-inning mini games and families will participate in a number of activities during the day-long event.
President’s Cup for hardy
Second round of Liberty Lake Ladies 18-Hole Club President’s Cup play was once more for the hardy.
Gusty winds and cold rain accompanied the competition. Low gross leaders, first through fourth flights were Billie Etter with 90, Freda Beckman and Jean Fulks with 99, Marge Doyl with 109 and Cathy Whitley with 113.
Respective net winners were Louise Newtson and Marion Jordan at 79, Betty Blackburn at 78 and Betty Dalzell at 76.
Winners of the fewest putts contest were Ets Yamada and Jean Fulks with 29, Doyl with 32 and Jane MacKelvie and Dalzell with 35.
Hangman handicap tourney begins
Familiar names took first round victories in the Hangman Valley Ladies Club handicap golf tournament.
Etter won first flight with a low gross 92 and Beckman netted 76.
In the second flight, Alice Hamilton shot 99 and Susan Henley netted 81.
Third flight leaders were Joyce Mohler and Dalzell.
Deckard Painted Hills medalist
During last week’s outing of Painted Hills Ladies Club golfer, Danice Deckard was medalist again.
Deckard shot 45 in A flight, while B winner LaVonne Childers shot 53 and no-handicap division golfer Debbie Akers shot 54.
Other low gross winners were Joyce Jacobs in C and Sherri Baker in D.
Respective net winners were Tanna McLean with 35, Tere VonMarbod with 34, Sandee Bickelhaupt with 37 and Cindee Corrick with 39.
