Moran Keeps Gsl Hopes Alive With Three-Set Win

Led by Mead’s Ryan Moran, the Greater Spokane League has one semifinalist and four consolation-bracket entries left at the State AAA tennis tournament in Tacoma.

Moran, the No. 1 seed out of the region, knocked off the state tournament’s No. 3 seed, Lars Anderson of Bremerton, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 on Friday, overcoming a 3-0 deficit in the third game to reach the round of four.

He faces No. 1 seed Jeremy Berman of Newport (Bellevue) today.

GSL rivals Amy Fong of Mead and Leslie Whitten of University go against one another this morning in the girls singles consolation round. Both won first-round matches, lost in the second, then won their first consolation-round match.

Also alive are the Mead boys doubles team of Brett Kaiser and Eric Donovan, who knocked off regional rivals John Bothwell and Chris Rozelle of Davis; and Ferris’ top-seeded girls doubles team of Darcy Ruemping and K.C. Richards, who were upset in the quarterfinals.

University ran out of magic. Central Valley couldn’t find the magic touch.

The result is a 1-4 record for the two Greater Spokane League schools and a short visit to Tacoma.

After U-Hi rallied for its fifth win in six games, 4-3 over Puyallup, the Titans lost 4-2 to Central Kitsap and 2-1 to North Thurston.

CV was beaten 8-1 by Kamiak and 11-6 by Rogers (Puyallup). No details were reported. Walla Walla, the region’s third representative, also was 0-2.

U-Hi came up with two runs in the bottom of the seventh against Puyallup on consecutive hits by Stephani Shelton, Toshua Ballou and Angel Whalen, the latter two doubles. Whalen had two RBIs. Cheryl Andrizzi pitched a three-hitter and struck out seven.

Against Central Kitsap, Whalen drove in a first-inning run with a single and Sally Jamison’s double produced a thirdinning run, but the Titans couldn’t overcome a three-run CK third. U-Hi loaded the bases in the seventh.

The same was true against North Thurston, when U-Hi loaded the bases in the seventh but couldn’t get the hit it needed. Devon Bakken doubled and scored for U-Hi in the sixth on an error. Andrizzi pitched another three-hitter, but three walks in the first and one Titans error produced the NT runs.

WV beat Arlington 2-0 and Mt. Si 2-1 while Colville’s wins were 7-1 over Mt. Si and 14-8 over Arlington.

WV lost 7-5 to Lindberg and Colville 5-0 to R.A. Long.
