Fec Says Rep. Greene Owes Ex-Husband Refund

Associated Press

Under Federal Election Commission regulations, Rep. Enid Greene’s campaign could owe a $1.82 million refund to her ex-husband for contributing too much money, even though he’s accused of getting the money illegally.

Greene, R-Utah, claims exhusband Joe Waldholtz embezzled money from her father before funneling it into her campaigns.

Waldholtz was indicted two weeks ago on separate charges alleging he ran a $3 million check-kiting scheme.

The FEC has sent letters to Greene saying her campaign organizations cannot keep money contributed beyond federal limits, and saying she should promptly refund overpayments, which would include the money given by Waldholtz, the Deseret News reported Tuesday.

Greene’s attorneys say the FEC isn’t taking into account the theft allegations, which are the subject of a $4 million civil lawsuit filed by Greene’s father.

“Requiring returning that money to him would be the ultimate irony since he stole it in the first place,” said Greene’s lawyer, Charles Roistacher.

A federal grand jury is also looking into the couple’s personal and campaign finances.

Greene has acknowledged 858 campaign violations, and blamed them all on Waldholtz, who was her campaign treasurer.
